MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXRT

Introduced for the 1983 model year, this FXR-family touring motorcycle was Harley-Davidson’s sport-touring interpretation of the new FXR platform. It paired the company’s rubber-mounted chassis with a frame-mounted fairing and hard saddlebags, giving the bike a more integrated long-distance look than many of Harley-Davidson’s earlier touring models while still retaining a relatively slim, performance-minded feel. The nameplate quickly became known among riders as one of the most distinctive members of the FXR line because it blended wind protection, luggage capacity, and sharper handling in a package aimed at riders who wanted interstate comfort without moving all the way to a full-dress touring bike. Over its run, the model remained closely associated with the FXR era’s reputation for strong chassis dynamics and practical sport-touring versatility. Harley-Davidson’s own parts and service documentation shows the nameplate in production through the 1992 model year, making 1992 its final year in the original continuous run. The model later gained renewed attention among enthusiasts and custom builders because its frame-mounted fairing and bagger proportions anticipated the modern sport-touring style that Harley-Davidson would revisit decades later.
