The Story of the FXSTD / Softail Deuce

This factory-custom Harley-Davidson Softail cruiser arrived for the 2000 model year as part of the Twin Cam era and was positioned as one of the most distinctive members of the Softail line. It was created to emphasize long, low custom styling rather than traditional dresser or touring cues, and it stood out from the rest of the family with its stretched visual proportions and chopper-inspired details. Harley-Davidson’s own historical materials describe it as one of the more radical factory customs in the Softail range, marking a clear break from the more classic Softail silhouettes that had defined the lineup since the late 1980s.

The model ran as a single continuous production series through the 2007 model year, after which it disappeared from the regular Harley-Davidson lineup. It is generally remembered as an early-2000s factory custom that bridged the brand’s retro-softail architecture with a more aggressively styled custom-cruiser look. Because it was sold across several years without a known revival under the same nameplate, it is treated as one uninterrupted production period.
