MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXE

This Harley-Davidson nameplate belongs to the electric-start version of the Super Glide family and first appeared for the 1974 model year. It emerged from the company’s early factory-custom era, when Harley-Davidson began combining the larger Big Twin chassis with styling cues that felt more individualized and street-oriented than the standard touring and cruiser offerings of the period. The result was a model aimed at riders who wanted the visual presence of a big Harley with a leaner, more personalized look.

The designation became part of Harley-Davidson’s Shovelhead-era lineup and remained in production through the 1984 model year. Over its run, it reflected the evolution of Harley’s Big Twin line during the 1970s and early 1980s, when electric starting and other convenience upgrades were becoming more common across the range. The nameplate is especially associated with the Super Glide’s role in establishing the factory-custom formula that later became a major part of Harley-Davidson’s identity.

Special appearances and running changes gave the model added historical interest, including the 1976 Liberty Edition and later 1980s-era updates tied to the larger 80-cubic-inch Big Twin family. Even so, it remained recognizably part of the original Super Glide concept: a stripped-down, rider-focused Harley with custom styling influence rather than full touring equipment.

Production ended after the 1984 model year, and the nameplate did not continue in an unbroken later run. Today it is remembered as an important transitional Harley-Davidson that helped define the factory-custom look and set the stage for later cruiser and Dyna-era interpretations of the same idea.
