The Story of the Forty-Eight

Introduced for the 2010 model year, this Sportster-based nameplate was Harley-Davidson’s take on a compact, stripped-back bobber with a strong custom-bike attitude. It arrived with the factory “peanut” tank, fat front tire, low stance, and minimalist silhouette that quickly made it one of the most recognizable modern Harley cruisers. The model was sold under the XL1200X designation and became closely associated with the brand’s Dark Custom design language: blacked-out trim, a tough urban look, and a focus on attitude rather than touring comfort.

Over time, the bike’s identity stayed rooted in that original idea, but Harley-Davidson refined the package and broadened the family. The Forty-Eight Special, introduced later, gave the concept a slightly different riding position and styling treatment while keeping the same basic formula of a small-displacement V-twin cruiser with classic Harley proportions. Even as the Sportster line evolved around it, the Forty-Eight remained the most bobber-like, old-school-styled member of the family.

The nameplate continued through the end of the traditional air-cooled Sportster era and was listed through the 2022 model year. It is remembered by enthusiasts as one of the defining factory customs of the 2010s: a motorcycle that looked close to a home-built street bob straight from the showroom, and one that helped keep the classic Sportster image alive in the modern Harley-Davidson lineup.
