The Classic variant of Harley-Davidson’s Road King touring line appeared for the 1998 model year as a more nostalgic, dressier take on the standard FLHR. It kept the Road King’s big, full-size touring presence but added period-inspired details such as wire-spoke wheels, studded leather saddlebags, and a more traditional look intended to evoke earlier Harley touring motorcycles while still serving as a long-distance machine. Over time, it evolved along with the wider Touring family, including major chassis and powertrain updates and the 2014-era refresh that brought the model into the Project RUSHMORE era. Despite those changes, the basic formula stayed consistent: a large American touring motorcycle with classic styling cues and removable wind protection. Harley-Davidson’s model listings show the nameplate continuing through the 2019 model year, after which it was no longer listed for 2020. Enthusiasts often regard it as the most old-school member of the Road King family, positioned between the stripped-down Road King and the more aggressively styled special models that later joined the lineup.
