MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Disc Glide

This FXR-based limited-edition touring variant first appeared for the 1984 model year and is documented in Harley-Davidson service and parts references through 1986, indicating a short, continuous production run. It was part of the early Evolution-era FXR family, a period when Harley-Davidson was experimenting with sharper handling chassis and more modern touring and cruiser packaging while still retaining the classic Big Twin character. The bike stood out from more mainstream FXR models through its distinctive factory custom presentation, including a rear wheel/disc-wheel treatment that gave the nameplate its identity and a more upscale, uncommon look. Because it was built in small numbers and offered only briefly, it has become a niche collector bike rather than a long-running showroom staple. It represents one of Harley-Davidson’s more interesting mid-1980s special models, bridging the company’s traditional styling cues and its move toward the Evolution generation.
