MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Magna Van

This GMC van nameplate was used for the brand’s high-cube commercial van body, a boxier cargo-oriented variant of the full-size G-series truck line. It first appeared in the mid-1970s, when GMC began offering the Magna Van alongside related Vandura and commercial van derivatives for delivery, service, and custom-body use. Through the late 1970s and 1980s, it remained a niche but recognizable upfit-friendly body style, generally associated with cargo hauling and specialty work applications rather than passenger use. By the early 1990s, the name was still appearing in GMC service and parts literature for G-series vans, but it was phased out before the all-new Savana-era commercial vans arrived. The Magna Van is best understood as a purpose-built commercial variant that bridged GMC’s classic G-van era and its later work-van lineup.
