The Story of the Cruise Origin AV

This autonomous people-mover was first shown by Cruise in early 2020 as a purpose-built, all-electric shared vehicle developed with GM, designed from the ground up to operate without a human driver. GM later said the vehicle would be built at Factory ZERO in Detroit-Hamtramck, and company communications through 2021 and 2022 described it as a key part of Cruise’s planned commercial robotaxi launch. In 2023, GM also said the platform would be used for a planned ridehail service in Japan with Honda and Cruise. By mid-2024, GM said Cruise had indefinitely delayed development of the vehicle and was refocusing its next autonomous vehicle efforts on the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt instead. In late 2024, GM said it would no longer fund Cruise’s robotaxi development work, effectively ending the program’s path to production. The nameplate is significant as one of the most ambitious purpose-built autonomous vehicle programs ever pursued by a major U.S. automaker, even though it never reached regular customer production.
