This heavy-duty Ford nameplate belonged to the Louisville-built L-Series of conventional trucks and represented the set-back front-axle version in the line. It first appears in Ford’s truck model coding by the 1970 model year, as part of the company’s expanding Class 8 conventionals aimed at line-haul and vocational work. Over time, the truck became a familiar sight in dump, mixer, tractor, and other commercial applications, valued for its long hood, heavy frames, and broad range of diesel and gasoline powertrain combinations depending on year and duty rating. Through the 1980s and 1990s, it remained part of Ford’s heavy-truck catalog while the L-Series evolved with updated cabs, aerodynamic revisions across the broader Louisville family, and later heavy-duty diesel offerings. The nameplate was still listed in Ford’s 1997 heavy-truck data book, after which Ford’s heavy-truck business was sold to Freightliner, bringing the Ford-branded production era to a close. Enthusiasts remember it as one of the most recognizable Ford Louisville variants, bridging the classic square-shouldered era of Ford heavies and the final years before the line changed hands.
