Ford’s medium-duty F-650 nameplate first appeared for the 2000 model year as part of the Super Duty commercial-truck lineup, giving Ford a Class 6/7 offering above the familiar pickup-based F-Series and below heavier vocational trucks. It was aimed at buyers who needed a straight-frame or chassis-cab truck for upfits such as service bodies, dumps, tow rigs, and other work applications. The early run used a medium-duty architecture shared with Ford’s then-current commercial-truck strategy and remained on sale through the mid-2000s before the nameplate disappeared from the lineup.
Ford revived the badge with an all-new generation that reached showrooms as 2016 model year trucks, with production beginning in 2015 at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant. This second production period re-established the truck as a modern medium-duty workhorse and placed it alongside the related F-750 in Ford’s commercial-truck range. Because the nameplate was discontinued and later returned, the model has multiple distinct production periods rather than one continuous run.
