MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the E-100

This nameplate belonged to the base half-ton version of the full-size van line that first appeared for the 1961 model year, when the brand launched its forward-control Econoline family. It was part of the original three-series setup for the van line and sat below the heavier-duty variants as the entry point for cargo and passenger use. Over time, the van evolved from a compact, cab-over-style utility vehicle into a broader full-size commercial and family platform, but the E-100 designation remained tied to the lightest-duty member of the range.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the series was offered in multiple body styles and configurations, reflecting the growing market for cargo vans, passenger wagons, and conversion vehicles. The nameplate became familiar to contractors, fleet buyers, campers, and custom-van enthusiasts alike, especially as the van culture of the 1970s pushed these vehicles beyond purely commercial work. By the early 1980s, the lineup was being rationalized around higher-capacity versions, and for 1984 the base model was renamed, with the E-100 designation officially dropped.

Because the nameplate ran in one continuous span from its debut until that changeover, it is best understood as the original light-duty chapter of the long-running full-size van family, with no separate revival period afterward.
