Introduced for the 1999 model year, this sport-touring nameplate expanded the brand’s ST family with a stronger, more performance-oriented version of the concept established by the earlier ST2. It used the company’s four-valve desmodromic twin architecture derived from the superbike line, giving the model a distinctly sportbike character beneath full touring bodywork. The result was a motorcycle aimed at riders who wanted long-distance comfort without giving up the handling and engine feel associated with the marque’s performance machines.
Within the ST range, this model sat between the milder two-valve touring version and the later, more extensively revised ST4 S. That positioning made it a key part of the original ST strategy: a cohesive family of sport-tourers built around shared chassis and fairing design, but differentiated by engine specification and equipment level. Over its run, it helped establish the brand’s sport-touring identity in markets that valued Italian performance with usable road manners.
The model remained in production through the 2003 model year, after which the ST line moved on to newer variants and eventually to the three-valve ST3. Enthusiast interest today tends to center on its combination of superbike-derived power delivery, classic early-2000s sport-touring styling, and its place as one of the defining motorcycles of the original ST series.
