Introduced in 1994, this middleweight Ducati superbike was developed as the smaller sibling to the 916 family and carried the same sharply styled Tamburini-era Superbike look in a more accessible package. It quickly became one of the most important models in Ducati’s water-cooled, four-valve lineage, bridging the gap between the company’s larger flagship superbikes and the smaller-displacement classes. Early versions included road-oriented and racing-focused variants, and the range later expanded into more track-biased special editions such as the SP, SPS and R, each aimed at enthusiasts and homologation racing customers. The model also earned a strong reputation in Supersport competition, reinforcing its status as a serious performance machine rather than just a styling exercise. Production ran through the 2003 model year, when Ducati’s Superbike line moved on to the next generation.
