Bus Chassis

Chevrolet’s bus-chassis story began as a commercial-duty adaptation of its truck lineup. By the 1938 model year, Chevrolet’s specifications already included a school bus chassis, and by 1940 the company was publishing distinct short- and long-wheelbase school bus chassis offerings for body builders. After World War II, the line continued under Chevrolet’s truck and commercial-vehicle catalogs, with model-series changes reflecting updated wheelbases, duty ratings, and chassis arrangements rather than a single fixed design. In the 1960s, Chevrolet shifted toward dedicated cowled bus chassis based on its medium-duty truck architecture, giving school and commercial bus builders a more specialized foundation than the earlier truck-derived conversions. That bus-chassis tradition carried on through later redesigns, including the conventional bus chassis era that followed. Because this nameplate history is separated by distinct periods and platform changes, it is best treated as a multi-era Chevrolet commercial model rather than one uninterrupted production run.
