The Story of the Geo Spectrum

This Geo-badged version of Chevrolet’s compact Isuzu-based hatchback and sedan arrived for the 1989 model year, after the same basic car had already been sold in the United States as the Chevrolet Spectrum. General Motors used Geo to market a group of import-style small cars through Chevrolet dealers, and this nameplate represented the brief final chapter for the Spectrum before Geo shifted to other models. The car shared its fundamental engineering with Isuzu’s I-Mark, giving it a distinctly Japanese-sourced character within GM’s lineup. In Geo form, it was offered only for one model year, making it one of the shortest-lived entries in the Geo family. Its significance today lies less in performance or rarity than in its place within GM’s late-1980s rebadging strategy, when the company was repositioning small cars to compete more directly with popular import compacts.
