The Story of the Metro

The Chevrolet Metro was the Chevrolet-badged version of GM’s tiny economy car sold in the United States after the Geo brand was phased out. Chevrolet adopted the Metro nameplate for the 1998 model year, giving the car a revised front and rear appearance while keeping its role as the division’s ultra-entry-level, fuel-sipping commuter. It was offered as a small hatchback and sedan, with the emphasis squarely on low purchase price, simplicity, and efficiency rather than comfort or performance. The Chevrolet Metro remained on sale through the 2001 model year, when this Chevrolet-branded run ended. Although the Metro name had already existed under Geo, the Chevrolet Metro is specifically the later North American Chevrolet-market chapter of the nameplate, tied to the same basic small-car lineage but distinct in branding and model-year history.
