The Story of the Kalos

This nameplate was Chevrolet’s European-market badge for the small GM Korea hatchback originally introduced under the Daewoo Kalos project. Chevrolet adopted the Kalos name in 2005 in markets where the Daewoo brand was being phased out, giving the car a Chevrolet identity while it remained a compact, value-focused global subcompact aimed at buyers who wanted straightforward transportation rather than a sporty premium image. The Chevrolet-badged Kalos was offered primarily as a five-door hatchback, and in some markets it was shown alongside the Aveo name as GM transitioned its international small-car lineup. By the late 2000s, Chevrolet had largely moved the model toward the Aveo nameplate, and the Kalos badge disappeared after the 2008 model year. The car is best remembered as one of the early examples of GM’s global badge-switching strategy: the same basic architecture appeared under different brands and names around the world, but in Chevrolet form the Kalos represents a short, clearly bounded chapter in the brand’s small-car history.
