MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Maverick X3

Introduced for the 2017 model year, this high-performance side-by-side marked a new chapter in the brand’s sport-UTV lineup. It arrived as a purpose-built performance nameplate with a lightweight chassis, aggressive long-travel suspension, and a turbocharged Rotax engine, aimed squarely at dune and desert riders rather than utility buyers. From the beginning, it was offered in both two-seat and extended MAX configurations, helping establish the model as a family of machines rather than a single trim level.

Over time, the nameplate became one of the best-known entries in the modern sport side-by-side segment. Can-Am continued to expand the lineup with different widths, seating layouts, and terrain-focused variants, while keeping the core identity centered on high-speed off-road performance. The model’s reputation was built on sharp handling, strong factory power, and a chassis designed to handle serious abuse in sand, rocks, and open desert terrain.

In the years since launch, the nameplate has remained a mainstay in the manufacturer’s off-road catalog and is still actively sold today. Later updates brought new equipment, revised suspension and cockpit features, and broader trim choices, but the original concept stayed consistent: a premium, enthusiast-focused sport SxS positioned near the top of the brand’s off-road lineup. For many riders, it has become the defining Can-Am performance side-by-side, especially in desert racing and recreational high-speed riding circles.
