The Story of the CTS

Launched for the 2003 model year, this nameplate marked a major turning point for Cadillac as the brand moved toward its angular “Art and Science” design language and a more driver-focused sport-sedan identity. It was positioned as a modern rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan on GM’s Sigma architecture, and it quickly became the car most associated with Cadillac’s early-2000s comeback. Over its life, the nameplate expanded beyond the core sedan into coupe, wagon, and high-performance V-Series derivatives, giving it unusual breadth for a luxury car line and helping establish Cadillac as a serious contender in the performance-luxury segment. The V-Series variants, especially, became enthusiast favorites and played an important role in reshaping Cadillac’s image during the 2000s and 2010s. The sedan evolved through multiple generations, with each one refining the formula while keeping the model centered on sharp styling, rear-drive dynamics, and a more aggressive character than Cadillac’s traditional flagship sedans. Production ended with the 2019 model year, closing a 17-year run before Cadillac shifted to its newer CT-based naming strategy.
