This rear-wheel-drive Cadillac nameplate was introduced for the 1987 model year, when Cadillac dropped the Fleetwood prefix from the former Fleetwood Brougham to avoid confusion with the smaller front-wheel-drive Fleetwood line. It carried forward the traditional full-size, body-on-frame Cadillac formula at a time when the brand was shifting many of its other large cars toward newer packaging and front-wheel-drive layouts.
Visually and conceptually, it represented the last of Cadillac’s classic formal sedans from the old-school luxury era: long, square, and deliberately traditional in appearance. The car stayed close to the established Fleetwood Brougham character through its run, with minor updates rather than major redesigns. Trim variations such as the d’Elegance package emphasized a more ornate, chauffeur-oriented luxury presentation, reinforcing the model’s position near the top of Cadillac’s sedan range.
Production continued through the 1992 model year. After that, Cadillac replaced it with a new rear-wheel-drive Fleetwood for 1993, bringing an end to the standalone Brougham nameplate in this era. Among enthusiasts, the model is remembered as one of the final large, formal, rear-drive Cadillacs built in the traditional American luxury style.
