This compact luxury nameplate arrived for the 2013 model year as Cadillac’s answer to the small premium sedan segment and marked an important shift for the brand toward lighter, more driver-focused cars. Built on GM’s Alpha architecture, it was developed to compete directly with established European sport sedans while bringing Cadillac’s own design language, rear-wheel-drive proportions, and available all-wheel drive to the class.
The original launch was centered on the four-door sedan, which established the model’s core identity. For 2015, a coupe body style joined the range, giving the nameplate a more expressive, two-door interpretation without changing its basic mission. In later years, the lineup also gained higher-output performance variants, most notably the ATS-V, which became part of Cadillac’s modern V-Series performance era and helped give the car a stronger enthusiast following.
Across its run, the model was positioned below Cadillac’s larger sport-luxury sedans and served as the brand’s compact entry in the premium market. It was also notable for being one of the first Cadillacs of the modern era to emphasize sharp handling and global-market competitiveness as much as traditional luxury. The nameplate remained in production through the 2019 model year, after which Cadillac shifted its compact sedan role to the CT4 and retired the ATS badge.
