BMW introduced the R 80 GS in 1987 as part of the second generation of its GS dual-sport line, following the original R 80 G/S that had created the large-capacity adventure-enduro class earlier in the decade. The R 80 GS carried BMW’s air-cooled boxer tradition into a more road-and-trail focused package, while adopting the newer Paralever rear suspension that became a hallmark of the later GS family. It sat below the larger R 100 GS, but shared the same basic concept: long-distance comfort, everyday usability, and real off-road credibility in one motorcycle. Over time, the R 80 GS became one of the defining “airhead” GS models and is remembered as an important bridge between the original G/S and BMW’s later, more modern touring enduros. Production continued through 1996, when BMW closed the chapter with the R 80 GS Basic, a nostalgic farewell model that echoed the look and spirit of the original GS era.
