BMW Motorrad introduced the M 1000 name as its highest-performance motorcycle line in 2021, beginning with the M 1000 RR as a race-homologation superbike derived from the S 1000 RR but developed more aggressively for track use and global competition. That debut established the M 1000 badge as BMW Motorrad’s first true M motorcycle family, rather than a one-off special. BMW later expanded the concept with the M 1000 R, bringing the same performance-focused positioning to a naked roadster format, and then the M 1000 XR, which carried the badge into the crossover sport-touring segment. The nameplate is therefore best understood as BMW’s motorcycle M sub-line: a family built around higher-spec chassis, aerodynamics, and motorsport influence rather than a single traditional model run. The original M 1000 RR remains the historical starting point for the nameplate, and the line continues in production today.
