R 65 LS

BMW introduced the R 65 LS in 1981 as a sportier, more styled interpretation of the smaller boxer twin line, positioned above the standard R 65. The name LS stood for a luxury-sport character, and the model was closely related to the revised 1981 R 65 rather than being a completely separate mechanical platform. BMW Group Classic describes it as a sporty variant of the small-displacement range, enhanced with distinctive equipment and design details that gave it a far more modern look than the base machine. Among its notable features were a standard dual front-disc brake setup, a larger rear drum brake, and innovative composite wheels, all aimed at giving the motorcycle a more upscale and performance-oriented feel. The R 65 LS also stood out visually with a compact cockpit fairing, a reshaped seat and tail section, and unique color schemes associated with designer Hans A. Muth. These styling cues made it one of the most recognizable BMW motorcycles of its era and helped define its enthusiast appeal. Production ran from 1981 through 1985, with no later revival under the same nameplate. In BMW’s motorcycle history, the R 65 LS is remembered as a distinctive transitional model: a classic air-cooled boxer twin wearing a sharply modern early-1980s design, and a standout among the brand’s smaller-displacement road bikes.
