The Story of the i7

BMW’s i7 is the battery-electric version of the brand’s flagship 7 Series luxury sedan. It was introduced for the 2023 model year as part of the seventh-generation 7 Series, marking the first time BMW’s full-size flagship was offered with a fully electric drivetrain from launch. The i7 arrived alongside gasoline and plug-in hybrid 7 Series variants, underscoring BMW’s strategy of offering multiple powertrain choices in the same luxury car line rather than creating a separate EV-only flagship.

The nameplate sits at the top of BMW’s electric passenger-car range and is closely tied to the modern 7 Series identity: long-wheelbase luxury, advanced driver-assistance technology, rear-seat comfort, and a strong emphasis on digital features and in-cabin presentation. From the outset, the i7 was positioned as the all-electric counterpart to the traditional 7 Series sedan, rather than a distinct body style or spin-off model.

Because the i7 is the electric flagship of an ongoing model line and remains in production, it should be treated as a current nameplate with a single continuous production period beginning in 2023. There is no earlier historical i7 production run to separate from the current one, and no discontinued-and-revived gap to account for.
