BMW introduced the F 800 GS for the 2008 model year as part of its middleweight GS family, positioning it as a more off-road-focused sibling to the road-biased F 650 GS. The nameplate marked BMW’s move into a twin-cylinder adventure enduro class built around the brand’s parallel-twin F-series concept, and it quickly became one of the most recognizable mid-size GS models. The first run continued for roughly a decade, with the line evolving through updates but retaining the same basic identity as a lightweight, adventure-oriented BMW with strong touring and dirt-road credentials.
At the end of that first production period, BMW reorganized the middle of the GS range and replaced the F 800 GS with the F 850 GS and F 750 GS family for the 2019 model year. That meant the F 800 GS name disappeared from the lineup for several years rather than continuing as a single uninterrupted model run.
BMW revived the F 800 GS name for the 2024 model year, but as a substantially revised motorcycle rather than a simple carryover. In its modern form, it serves as the entry point to BMW’s GS adventure line, while the larger F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure sit above it. Because the nameplate has appeared in two separate production periods, the F 800 GS should be understood as a recurring BMW GS badge with a gap between the original first-generation bike and the later revived model. That split history is part of what makes the F 800 GS notable among BMW motorcycles: it bridges the brand’s earlier middleweight GS era and its current adventure lineup.
