The Bentayga is Bentley’s first SUV and the brand’s first attempt to translate its traditional grand-touring character into a high-riding luxury utility vehicle. Bentley launched the model in 2015 for the 2016 model year, naming it after Roque Bentayga, a mountain rock formation on Gran Canaria in Spain. From the beginning, the Bentayga was positioned as a flagship expression of Bentley craftsmanship, combining hand-built luxury with all-terrain capability and long-distance refinement.
The first-generation Bentayga established the nameplate as a key model for Bentley and expanded the range with several notable derivatives over time, including diesel, V8, hybrid, and Speed variants. Those versions helped define the Bentayga as more than a single-engine luxury SUV; it became a broad family of models aimed at different kinds of buyers, from traditional Bentley customers to those drawn to performance or efficiency. Bentley also used the model to introduce its first hybrid SUV and, later, to push further toward electrification.
In 2020, Bentley launched the second-generation Bentayga, bringing a major update to the nameplate rather than ending it. That refresh introduced new technology and updated styling while preserving the model’s core role in the lineup. The Bentayga remains in production and continues to serve as Bentley’s SUV offering, with an emphasis on luxury, customization, and everyday usability. It is widely significant as the model that opened Bentley to the SUV market and helped redefine the brand for the modern era.
