Aprilia introduced the RXV 550 in 2006 as the larger-displacement enduro version of its radical RXV/SXV off-road family. It was part of a fresh generation of lightweight, competition-focused Aprilia dirt bikes that used a compact V-twin layout instead of the single-cylinder engines more commonly seen in the segment. The RXV 550 was positioned as the more powerful, big-bore sibling to the RXV 450 and was aimed at riders who wanted a race-bred enduro machine with unusual engineering and a strong enthusiast following.
The model belonged to Aprilia’s broader RXV/SXV program, which was notable for bringing a twin-cylinder configuration to enduro and supermoto bikes at a time when most rivals relied on singles. That made the RXV 550 stand out immediately, both technically and visually, and it helped define the series’ reputation for being exotic, aggressive, and very different from mainstream dual-sport offerings. Aprilia continued to list the RXV 550 in model-year form through 2011, after which the nameplate disappeared from the brand’s regular lineup.
Because the RXV 550 had a single continuous production run, its history is straightforward: debut in the 2006 model year, then a run of updates and model-year revisions through 2011, before discontinuation. Today it is remembered as one of Aprilia’s most distinctive off-road machines and one of the more unusual factory-built V-twin enduros of its era.
