Contemporary Yamaha material also described it as an export enduro competition model when it appeared at the 1991 Tokyo Motor Show, underscoring that it was aimed at riders who wanted a hard-edged, race-capable off-road machine rather than a casual trail bike. Over its life, the model followed the familiar YZ-derived Yamaha off-road formula of the era, and it became part of the company’s well-regarded two-stroke enduro lineage before being phased out as Yamaha moved toward newer four-stroke off-road development later in the decade.
