Yamaha introduced this liter-class sport model for the 1996 model year as a high-performance road bike aimed at riders who wanted strong real-world pace rather than a pure track-focused supersport. It arrived during the transition from the FZR generation to Yamaha’s later YZF-R1 era, and it became known for blending a reworked FZR1000-derived engine with lighter internals, EXUP-equipped character, and chassis tuning intended to deliver confident, fast secondary-road handling. In Yamaha’s own historical material, it is presented as the company’s flagship in that middle ground between traditional 1,000cc sport machines and the more radical supersport direction that followed.
