Yamaha’s lightweight dual-sport small-displacement trail bike was introduced in Japan as the Serow 225 in 1985, with XT225 used in export markets. It became one of Yamaha’s best-known approachable off-road singles, known for blending friendly manners with genuine trail capability rather than chasing pure competition performance. In Yamaha’s own history materials, the Serow is identified as the start of a new “mountain trail” category, and the name was retained across a long production run. In North American use, the XT225/XT225C designation carried through the 2000s, with parts listings showing final 2007 model-year variants. The model built a strong reputation among beginner riders, commuters, and adventure-minded owners who valued its simple air-cooled single-cylinder layout, easy handling, and durable character. It remained a cult favorite long after newer dual-sports arrived because it was compact, unintimidating, and well suited to back roads, forest trails, and travel-oriented use.
