This Yamaha snowmobile nameplate first appeared in 1984 with the PZ480 Phazer, a compact performance sled that helped define Yamaha’s sporty, lightweight approach to recreational snowmobiling. The original machine became one of the company’s longest-running and best-known snowmobile models, and Yamaha’s own historical material highlights it as an important early success in the brand’s snowmobile lineup.
After the original Phazer era ended, Yamaha later revived the name for a new generation of snowmobiles. For the 2007 model year, Yamaha introduced an all-new Phazer built around a newly designed 499cc four-stroke twin, positioning it as a light, responsive performance model rather than a traditional heavy trail sled. That revival expanded into variants such as mountain-oriented versions, showing that the nameplate had been brought back for a distinctly different era and market role.
The Phazer designation therefore spans more than one production period: an original 1980s run, followed by a later revival in the mid-2000s that carried the name into Yamaha’s final snowmobile years. Yamaha announced in 2023 that it would exit the snowmobile business, with North American sales ending after the 2025 model year.
