FZR1000

Yamaha introduced this liter-class sport motorcycle in the 1987 model year as one of the company’s first big-bike racer replicas, building on the GENESIS engine concept and the lightweight Deltabox chassis philosophy that Yamaha was developing in the mid-1980s. The original version established the model’s identity as a high-performance four-stroke inline-four aimed at serious road riding as well as outright sport use. A major redesign arrived for 1989, bringing a more mature second-generation direction and, in later versions, Yamaha’s EXUP exhaust power-control system, which became one of the bike’s most recognized technical calling cards. Across its run, the machine evolved from an early superbike benchmark into a refined, powerful road-going flagship that earned a strong reputation for stability and usable performance. By the mid-1990s, the nameplate had reached the end of its continuous production run and was superseded by Yamaha’s later 1,000cc supersport direction, including the YZF1000R Thunderace. The model remains significant among enthusiasts as an influential bridge between Yamaha’s early Genesis-era sportbikes and the more modern supersport machines that followed.
