MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FJ09

This Yamaha sport-touring nameplate was introduced in the 2015 model year in North America as the FJ-09, a midweight touring-oriented derivative of Yamaha’s MT-09 platform. It was positioned as a more versatile, long-distance-friendly alternative to the naked MT-09, combining upright ergonomics, wind protection, and luggage-ready practicality with the same basic triple-cylinder family. Yamaha continued the nameplate through the 2016 and 2017 model years. For 2018, Yamaha renamed the line Tracer 900, which marked the end of the FJ-09 badging rather than a separate revival. Enthusiasts generally remember it as the U.S.-market bridge between Yamaha’s aggressive MT family and its more touring-focused sport-touring offerings.
