V90

The V90 nameplate has appeared in two separate Volvo estate-car eras. The original V90 arrived for model year 1997 as the renamed successor to the 960 wagon/estate, part of Volvo’s late-1990s shift to its newer S/V naming strategy. That first-run V90 was a short-lived continuation of the rear-wheel-drive 960 family and was discontinued after model year 1998. Volvo revived the V90 name in 2016 for an all-new large premium estate based on the company’s SPA platform, positioned as the successor to the V70 and the wagon counterpart to the modern 90-series sedan. In Volvo’s heritage and product history, the V90 therefore represents both the final chapter of the classic 960-based estate and a later, fully modern revival of Volvo’s flagship wagon format.
