The Story of the EX60

This all-new battery-electric midsize SUV marks a major turning point in Volvo’s product strategy. Introduced in 2026 for the 2027 model year, it arrived as the brand’s first fully electric vehicle in the premium midsize SUV segment and is widely positioned as the electric successor to the company’s long-running midsize SUV family. Volvo has described it as a key volume model for its future lineup, aimed at buyers who want the practicality and footprint of a midsize SUV without a gasoline or plug-in-hybrid powertrain.

The nameplate is significant for more than just its market role. Volvo has said this is its first fully electric car to be designed, developed, and built in Sweden, with production centered at the Torslanda plant near Gothenburg. The model also inaugurates a new generation of Volvo electric architecture, underscoring the company’s shift toward a software-led, fully electric future. In that sense, it represents both a new vehicle and a new era for the brand.

At launch, the vehicle was presented as a modern, technology-forward family SUV rather than a sport or luxury halo model. It carries the brand’s familiar focus on safety, clean Scandinavian design, and everyday usability, while also serving as an important bridge for customers moving from combustion or hybrid Volvo SUVs into a dedicated EV. Because it is an all-new nameplate with no earlier production run, its history begins with this 2027 introduction.
