This Japanese subcompact traceable to the 1970s began life in 1973 as a higher-grade coupe derivative within an existing small-car line, then became a standalone nameplate in 1978. From there it evolved through five generations as a practical, lightweight hatchback aimed at the entry-level market, with a strong reputation for durability and efficient packaging. Early versions were known for a rear-wheel-drive layout and simple, economical engineering, while the mid-1980s redesign switched the car to front-wheel drive and broadened its appeal as a modern supermini. Later generations added more body styles and a wider range of trims, including sporty turbocharged versions that gave the car an enthusiast following in Japan and export markets. The final generation arrived in the mid-1990s with a more rounded design and improved safety and refinement, but the line was phased out in July 1999 and replaced by a newer small-car successor.
