The nameplate arrived for the 2007 model year as a rugged, retro-styled SUV inspired by Toyota’s off-road heritage, especially the FJ40. It was developed as a compact, capable, enthusiast-focused four-wheel-drive model with a deliberately simple, functional character rather than a luxury-first approach. Toyota positioned it as a modern interpretation of its classic utility vehicles, giving it distinctive styling, a short wheelbase feel, and a strong emphasis on trail use and everyday durability.
In production, it became one of Toyota’s most recognizable modern off-roaders, appealing to buyers who wanted a distinctive SUV with real trail credibility. The model remained in the lineup through the 2014 model year, when Toyota marked the end of its run with farewell editions and announced that production would conclude after that model year. Although the design had a strong throwback look, it was a contemporary vehicle under the skin and helped keep Toyota’s heritage-based off-road image visible to a new generation of buyers.
