This compact nameplate arrived for the 2001 model year as Suzuki’s global replacement for the Esteem/Baleno family, and it was introduced in Japan as Aerio (Liana) before reaching overseas markets shortly afterward. The model was positioned as an affordable, practical small car with two main body styles: a sedan and a tall hatchback/wagon layout aimed at maximizing interior space. In North America, it stood out for offering all-wheel drive in an entry-level segment, something that helped define its market identity during the early 2000s. Over its run, the car received a series of updates rather than a full redesign, including powertrain revisions, exterior and interior refreshes, and trim reshuffling as Suzuki kept it competitive against newer compact rivals. By the final model year, the hatchback had already been phased out in favor of newer Suzuki entries, leaving the sedan to finish the line’s production run before the nameplate was replaced.
