Introduced for the 2007 model year, this was Saturn’s short-lived two-seat roadster and one of the brand’s most distinctive late-era products. It was developed on GM’s Kappa rear-drive sports-car architecture, shared with the Pontiac Solstice and later the Opel GT, and it marked a major shift from Saturn’s earlier practical, economy-focused image toward something more aspirational and enthusiast-oriented. The styling was dramatic for the brand, with a low-slung body, long hood, and aggressive proportions that gave it a stronger presence than most Saturns that came before it.
The nameplate debuted with a standard roadster setup and quickly became known for the Red Line performance version, which added a more serious sporting character and helped define the car’s enthusiast appeal. Even though it was positioned as a comparatively attainable open-top sports car, it never had a long production life. Saturn itself was wound down after GM’s 2009 restructuring, and the roadster remained on sale only through the 2010 model year as the brand was phased out.
Because it arrived near the end of Saturn’s existence, this model is often remembered as a kind of swan-song vehicle: a bold attempt to give the brand a personality beyond compact commuters and crossovers. It stands out today as one of the most recognizable Saturn nameplates and a notable example of GM’s mid-2000s Kappa sports-car program.
