Introduced for the 2006 model year, this mid-engine two-seat coupe was created as the fixed-roof counterpart to the brand’s roadster, with the first version arriving as a Cayman S before the full range expanded later that year. It quickly established itself as a purist driver’s car: compact, balanced, and positioned between the entry-level sports roadster and the flagship rear-engine coupe. The second generation arrived for the 2013 model year with a cleaner body, revised packaging, and continued emphasis on chassis balance and everyday usability. In 2016, the model was folded into the 718 family naming scheme, marking a new era for the nameplate and a shift to turbocharged four-cylinder power in the core versions. Even with that change, the car remained true to its original formula of a low-slung mid-engine sports coupe, and later performance derivatives such as GTS 4.0, GT4, and GT4 RS helped preserve its enthusiast appeal by bringing back naturally aspirated flat-six character in higher-tier variants. Across its life, the nameplate has become one of the most recognized modern German sports coupes, valued for its balance, steering feel, and close relationship to the open-top sister model.
