This Plymouth nameplate first appeared for the 1971 model year as a compact two-door hardtop coupe derived from the Valiant family. It was part of Chrysler’s era of closely related corporate cousins, sharing its basic A-body roots with other Plymouth and Dodge compact models but wearing Plymouth-specific styling and trim. The car was positioned as a sporty, practical compact rather than a true muscle model, and it remained in the lineup through the middle of the 1970s before the compact A-body Plymouths were phased out.
The nameplate returned in 1983 on a very different vehicle: a small front-wheel-drive pickup based on the Dodge Rampage. This second use of the badge had no direct mechanical or body-style continuity with the earlier coupe, but Chrysler reused the familiar name for a low-volume, car-based utility model sold through Plymouth dealers. That truck version was a one-year revival and is now remembered as one of the brand’s oddest late-period offerings.
Because the badge was used in two separate production periods with a long gap between them, the nameplate’s history is best understood as two distinct chapters rather than one continuous run. Enthusiasts usually remember the earlier car as the classic compact coupe and the later revival as a curiosity from Chrysler’s early-1980s front-drive experimentation.
