This full-size nameplate began in the mid-1970s when it replaced the previous top-tier version of the company’s Fury line. The first run used Chrysler’s large rear-wheel-drive C-body and was aimed at buyers who still wanted a traditional American full-size car after the fuel crisis had begun to shrink that market. It was offered for the 1975 through 1977 model years, then disappeared as corporate product planning shifted and the brand’s large-car presence was reduced.
The name returned for 1980 on a different platform, this time as a downsized rear-wheel-drive car that was heavily oriented toward fleet, taxi, and police buyers. That second-era car lasted only two model years in its original form before being revised again for 1982, when it moved to the M-body and carried on through 1989. In that final long production stretch, it remained one of the most familiar Chrysler-built fleet sedans of the 1980s and was especially common in law-enforcement service. By the end of the decade, it represented one of the last traditional rear-wheel-drive, V8-era American sedans in the Plymouth lineup before the nameplate was retired.
