This nameplate appeared late in Oldsmobile’s front-wheel-drive full-size lineup, introduced for the 1997 model year as an upscale version of the Eighty-Eight after the Ninety-Eight was discontinued. It was positioned as a traditional, comfortable sedan for buyers who still wanted the classic Oldsmobile luxury-car formula at the end of the brand’s rear-market heyday. The car carried over the Eighty-Eight’s basic architecture and doors, but wore the more formal Ninety-Eight-style front-end treatment and a more dignified trim presentation, giving it a distinct identity within the range even though it was closely related to other Oldsmobile B-body sedans. The nameplate was offered only briefly, with production ending after the 1998 model year as Oldsmobile continued to simplify its lineup and move toward newer global models. In enthusiast circles, it is remembered as one of the last attempts to keep the old-school Oldsmobile luxury sedan tradition alive, bridging the gap between the long-running Ninety-Eight lineage and the brand’s later, more modern direction.
