This minivan nameplate entered the U.S. market for the 1993 model year as a Nissan-badged family hauler developed in cooperation with Ford. The first generation was closely tied to the Mercury Villager and established the model as Nissan’s answer to the growing minivan segment in North America. After the initial run ended, the nameplate returned for the 2004 model year in an all-new, larger design that moved away from the earlier Ford-linked hardware and gave the vehicle a more distinctive Nissan identity.
A second revival followed for the 2011 model year, when the nameplate reappeared on a new generation built in Japan and positioned as a more upscale, comfort-focused minivan. That version continued the model’s emphasis on passenger space, sliding-door practicality, and family convenience, while adopting a softer, more premium market image than many of its rivals.
Because the nameplate was discontinued and later brought back more than once, its history is best understood as multiple separate production periods rather than one uninterrupted run. It served as Nissan’s dedicated minivan offering in the U.S. for much of its life, spanning several distinct eras of minivan design and market strategy before ending with the 2017 model year.
