The 300ZX nameplate was Nissan’s export-market designation for the Z-car family during the 1980s and 1990s, closely tied to Japan’s Fairlady Z line. It first appeared on the third-generation Z31 in 1983, when Nissan moved the Z car to a more modern V6-powered formula and gave the model a sharper, more technical character than its inline-six predecessors. That generation established the 300ZX as a more refined grand touring sports car, while still preserving the long-hood, short-deck proportions that defined the Z identity.
In 1989, Nissan launched the second major 300ZX era with the Z32 generation. This version was a much more dramatic redesign, with wider proportions, a stronger emphasis on performance, and a distinctly more contemporary shape. It became one of the best-known Japanese sports cars of its era and helped cement the 300ZX as a global halo model for Nissan. In period tests and marketing, the car was often associated with advanced chassis technology and a premium sports-car image rather than bare-bones simplicity.
The Z32 remained in production through the end of the nameplate’s original run, which concluded in August 2000. After that, Nissan paused the Z car line before bringing it back with the all-new 350Z in 2002. Because the 300ZX covered one continuous production span from its introduction in 1983 until discontinuation in 2000, it is treated as a single historical production period rather than a revived nameplate.
