The California 1400 Custom was Moto Guzzi’s stripped-back take on the company’s all-new big cruiser family, introduced in Europe for the 2013 model year after the California 1400 Touring appeared first in 2012. It marked a major modern reset for the California nameplate, replacing earlier versions with a new 1,380 cc transverse V-twin platform that brought Moto Guzzi’s classic shaft-drive cruiser formula into a more contemporary era. The Custom emphasized a lower, leaner, more muscular look than the touring-oriented sibling, with a simplified silhouette and drag-style attitude that gave the model a stronger custom-cruiser identity.
As part of the 1400 series, it represented one of Moto Guzzi’s most important postwar flagship efforts and helped reassert the brand’s presence in the heavyweight cruiser market. The California 1400 family expanded later with additional variants, but the Custom remained the most minimalist expression of the platform. Its run ended when the 1400 series was phased out, closing the chapter on this modern interpretation of one of Moto Guzzi’s most recognizable nameplates.
