This nameplate appeared in the early 1990s as the next step in Moto Guzzi’s long-running California touring/cruiser family, following the California III. It kept the classic transverse 90-degree V-twin layout that defined the brand, but updated the formula into a heavier, more road-oriented cruiser with broad appeal in Europe and the United States. The 1100-badged version became the family’s flagship displacement for this generation and is generally associated with the 1064 cc engine used across the line during the 1990s and 2000s.
Over its life, the model evolved through several clearly recognizable phases and trims rather than being a single frozen design. Early carbureted versions gave way to fuel-injected variants, and Moto Guzzi continued refining the platform with different equipment levels, touring-focused versions, and special editions. The California EV era brought the line further modernization, while later derivatives such as Touring, Classic, and Vintage emphasized different interpretations of the same underlying concept: long-distance comfort, distinctive Italian styling, and the relaxed character that made the California one of Moto Guzzi’s signature motorcycles.
The model remained in production until the arrival of the new California 1400 generation, which effectively closed the chapter on the 1100-series California. A notable late highlight was the 90th-anniversary special edition in 2012, which underscored the enduring importance of the nameplate before the line moved on to a completely new platform.
