Introduced in 1996, this Mercedes-Benz compact roadster marked a fresh, more youthful direction for the brand. The name was said to stand for “Sportlich, Leicht, Kurz” — sporty, lightweight, short — and the car quickly became known for its distinctive folding steel vario-roof, which gave it true coupe-like security and refinement while still delivering open-air driving. The second generation arrived in 2004 and evolved the concept with a more mature design and broader model range, while keeping the core formula intact.
