The Story of the CLS-Class

This Mercedes-Benz four-door coupe emerged from the Vision CLS concept shown in 2003 and reached production for the 2004 model year, establishing a new niche for a sleek, coupelike luxury sedan. Built on E-Class underpinnings, it became the brand’s styling-led alternative to more traditional executive sedans and helped popularize the modern four-door coupe format. The first generation ran through 2010, followed by a second generation introduced for 2011 that expanded the line with the Shooting Brake estate variant in some markets. A third generation arrived for 2019, returning to a cleaner coupe-only body style and further sharpening the model’s role as a design-focused grand touring Mercedes. Over its life, the nameplate was closely associated with distinctive proportions, AMG performance versions, and a premium position between the E-Class and S-Class. Mercedes-Benz ended CLS production in August 2023, closing the model’s run after three generations and nearly two decades on sale.
